Going Low-Tech

I love technology. I use my laptop computer so much I should probably name it. Other things I can't do without are my Kindle, the Wii and iPods. Tech gadgets definitely make life easier, but sometimes it's nice to step away from them and do things the old-fashioned way.

Yesterday I broke out real index cards to help me organize my stories. I am arranging them into themed collections. So, one side of the card has a list of themes the story falls into. The other side has the story's title, synopsis, word count and editing notes. I'm still working on filling out cards for all of my stories, but soon I'll be arranging them into neat little piles based on those theme words. Maybe it's just me, but does anybody else get excited about stacks of index cards? They are wonderful, tangible signs of all of the love and labor I put into my writing.

Today I ran a little errand, just for myself. I used a payment for one of my stories to buy a 2012 planner made especially for writers (and a pumpkin spice latte). I have several calendars on my computer to keep track of appointments and such. This planner is going to be just for my writing. Since I hate to waste things, I plan on filling it up with writing-related deadlines, goals and such.

Speaking of writing-related things, I am going to be doing something very fun and special next week. I can't tell you what it is at this moment, but I'll let you know what's happening in a few days!

Have a great weekend everybody!

  1. You are way more organized than I am with my writing. I'll find notebooks and look inside and find something I'd forgotten I'd written! Ah well.

  4. Oh Janel! We're a lot alike, except little stacks of index cards don't excite me! I like note pads, small or large, and I, too, ATTEMPT to be organized with my writing..and most everything else. Oooh, please e-mail me and tell me more about your planner!! I have a curious mind, ya know!!

  6. I can't help myself - I get giddy over paper and I'll write on anything. Backs of flyers even. And, when I get a new tablet to write and draw in...well, it's almost better than - dare I say it! SEX. The tooth of the paper, the different writing instruments. See what I mean. ; - )

  9. I haven't used index cards since high school when I was studying organic chemistry, etc. I think its a great idea to use them for organizing your stories...what a great idea. Maybe I can do that for poetry?!

  10. Serena - Index cards would definitely help arrange a poetry collection. You could even try shuffling them to see how you like that order!
