Book Review: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie

The Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie
By Alan Bradley
ISBN: 9780385342308
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication Date: April 2009

Synopsis: Eleven-year old Flavia de Luce is going about her life in 1950's England. Her passions are chemistry, poisons and paying back her sisters. When she discovers a body in their cucumber patch her stamp collecting father is arrested for the murder. Flavia decides to find the real killer herself.

My Thoughts: I honestly haven't enjoyed a mystery this much in a long time. An eleven-year old girl is not a usual cozy main character, but I fell in love with Flavia anyway. Would a real eleven-year old be able to solve a murder? Probably not, but Flavia's wit and sarcasm had me laughing through the book. I have to admit the chemistry explanations were way over my head (I hated chemistry in school), but reading about a young girl manufacturing poisons in her spare time was fascinating. Honestly. This was a refreshing, fun twist in my cozy mystery reading.
